We simply don’t believe that all people who struggle with alcohol and other drug misuse are the same. In fact, each person who comes to us is unique, as are their goals, values, beliefs, and overall situation.
Why Individual Counseling for Substance Use?
Group treatment works well for many people, but it isn’t right for everyone — and it isn’t required for recovery. Many clients at The Banyan Tree in Athens, GA find that individual counseling gives them the privacy and pace they need to do honest work around substance use.
Individual counseling is often a better fit when you:
- Want privacy as you explore your relationship with alcohol or other substances
- Have professional or personal concerns that make a group setting feel unsafe
- Aren’t sure whether your use rises to the level of a “disorder” and want to think it through
- Are working through co-occurring concerns (trauma, anxiety, depression) alongside substance use
- Have tried group treatment before and want a different kind of support this time
Our Approach
We don’t subscribe to a one-size-fits-all model. Some clients want abstinence; others want to moderate or cut back. Some are ready for change today; others are exploring whether change is even on the table. Our therapists meet you where you are, without judgment, and help you clarify what kind of relationship with substances you actually want.
The work draws from evidence-based approaches like Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and harm reduction frameworks — matched to your goals and clinical picture, not a predetermined protocol.
What to Expect
Your first few sessions will focus on understanding your history, your current use patterns, what’s brought you to therapy now, and what you hope changes. Together you and your therapist will develop a plan that fits your life. Sessions are typically weekly at first, scaling back as the work progresses. We can also coordinate with prescribers if medication is part of your care.
If you’d like to talk through whether individual counseling at The Banyan Tree is the right fit, our intake coordinator can help you sort through options on a free consultation call.
