Preparing for the growth of your family is a truly exciting adventure. However, it can also be an extremely stressful time. From difficulties with conception and complications in pregnancies to miscarriages and complex births, there is a tremendous amount to manage and a constant string of decisions. Transitioning from one stage to the next can be complicated.

At The Banyan Tree, we have clinicians who are focused and trained in helping couples and families transition from one stage to the next so that you may continue to grow as a healthy, happy family.

What We Help With

Family growth and pregnancy bring real joy — and they can also bring grief, anxiety, identity shifts, and relationship strain. Our Athens-based therapists support clients through:

  • Fertility struggles and the emotional toll of trying to conceive
  • Pregnancy after loss — the unique anxiety of carrying a baby after miscarriage or stillbirth
  • High-risk pregnancy, bed rest, and pregnancy complications
  • Birth trauma and difficult delivery experiences
  • The transition to parenthood and the identity shift it brings
  • Adoption and the layered emotions that come with it
  • Postpartum mental health (depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, postpartum rage)
  • Co-parenting dynamics that emerge or shift after a baby arrives

Our Approach

We meet each family where they are. Some clients come in solo to process pregnancy loss or work through anxiety about an upcoming birth. Others come as couples to navigate decisions, communication, or the strain a fertility journey can put on a relationship. We draw from trauma-informed, attachment-based, and somatic approaches as appropriate to your specific situation.

We also recognize that pregnancy and early parenting are deeply embodied experiences — what’s happening in your body is part of the clinical picture. Several of our Athens clinicians have specialized training in perinatal mental health and work closely with OBs, midwives, and lactation consultants when a coordinated approach helps.

What to Expect

A first session is usually an intake conversation: what’s brought you in, where you are in the family-growth process, and what would be most helpful right now. From there, your therapist will recommend a frequency (often weekly during acute phases) and the focus areas you’ll work on together.

The Banyan Tree’s intake coordinator can also help you think through whether individual counseling, couples sessions, or a combination is the right fit before you begin.

What can a therapist help women with, specifically?

At the Banyan Tree, our therapists can assist women with a multitude of issues. These may include managing life transitions like marriage, motherhood or menopause, dealing with reproductive and sexual health issues, coping with gender-based violence or harassment, and navigating professional challenges such as workplace discrimination or balancing career and family. What is women's therapy?

Women's therapy refers to a specialized type of therapy that focuses on issues specific to women, including maternal mental health, body image concerns, fertility issues, aging, menopause, domestic violence, sexual abuse, career pressures, and societal expectations. At the Banyan Tree, our women's therapy is tailored to address these unique concerns, offering a supportive environment for women to explore, understand, and navigate their individual challenges. When should women seek therapy?

Therapy can be beneficial for women at any time, regardless of their life stage or circumstances. It's particularly important to consider seeking therapy when experiencing feelings of overwhelming stress, anxiety, sadness, or other emotional distress that interfere with daily activities. Major life transitions, relationship issues, divorce, grief, and trauma are also common reasons for seeking therapy.
