The Truth About Therapy and Insurance: Why Self-Pay Might Be the Better Choice
If you’ve been looking into therapy at The Banyan Tree Center and noticed we’re fully out of network, you’re probably wondering what that actually means and whether it’s worth it.
We get it. Paying out of pocket for therapy is a big decision. And we’d rather be upfront with you than leave you guessing.
Here’s what most people don’t know about self-pay therapy — and why it might make more sense than you think.
What does out of network actually mean?
The Banyan Tree Center is fully out of network with all insurance plans. We do not bill insurance directly. You pay for your sessions up front, and depending on your plan, you may be able to submit for partial reimbursement using a superbill, which we provide and is essentially a detailed receipt with the clinical codes your insurance needs to process a claim.
Is self-pay therapy actually more affordable?
Sometimes, yes. And more often than people expect.
Here’s the math worth doing:
- Do you have a deductible you haven’t met yet? If so, you’re paying out of pocket either way until you hit that number.
- Do you have a high copay or coinsurance percentage? Some insurance plans charge $50 to $100 per session even after the deductible.
- Does your plan limit the number of sessions you can have per year? Many do.
If any of those apply to you, our self-pay rate may end up being comparable — or even less than what you’d pay through insurance once you factor in all the variables. You can view our current session rates to run those numbers for yourself.
What about using my out of network benefits?
If your plan includes out of network mental health benefits — and many do — you may be able to get partial reimbursement for your sessions at The Banyan Tree Center.
Here’s how it works: after each session we provide you with a superbill. You submit that to your insurance company directly. Depending on your plan, they reimburse you a percentage of the cost — often 50 to 80 percent after your out of network deductible is met.
Before your first session it’s worth calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card and asking two questions:
- Do I have out of network mental health benefits?
- What is my out of network deductible and have I met it?
Those two answers will tell you a lot about what reimbursement might look like for you.
Why we don’t accept insurance — and what that means for you
This is the part most practices don’t talk about openly. We will.
Working with insurance companies requires therapists to spend significant time on paperwork, prior authorizations, billing disputes, and documentation that has nothing to do with helping you. It also requires a formal mental health diagnosis that becomes part of your insurance record — which some people are completely comfortable with and others aren’t.
When we work on a self-pay basis, a few things change:
You get more privacy
Your insurance company doesn’t receive session notes, treatment plans, or progress documentation. What happens in therapy stays between you and your therapist.
You choose who you work with
Insurance networks limit your options to whoever is in-network. Self-pay means you can choose the therapist who is actually the right fit for you — not just the one your insurance company approves.
Your therapist can focus on you
Without insurance requirements dictating session frequency, treatment approach, or documentation format, your therapist has more freedom to do what actually works for your specific situation.
You set the pace
Insurance plans often cap the number of sessions you can have per year. Self-pay means your treatment plan is driven by your progress and your goals — not an arbitrary limit.
Do I need a diagnosis to see a therapist at The Banyan Tree?
No. You don’t need a diagnosis to start therapy with us. You don’t need a referral from your doctor. You don’t need prior authorization from anyone.
You just need to reach out.
If a diagnosis is clinically appropriate and helpful for your care, your therapist will discuss that with you. But it’s not a requirement to get started.
What if I genuinely can’t afford therapy right now?
We believe everyone deserves access to mental health support and we want to be honest with you rather than just tell you what you want to hear.
If our rates are out of reach right now, a few options worth exploring:
- Check your out of network benefits — you may get more reimbursement than you expect
- Open Enrollment — if your insurance plan is coming up for renewal, look for plans with stronger out of network mental health benefits
- Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) — many employers offer a set number of free therapy sessions through an EAP, sometimes with out of network providers
- Community mental health centers — Athens has resources for lower-cost mental health support if cost is a significant barrier
We’d rather point you toward something that works than have you go without support entirely.
