What Can I Expect During the Testing Process?

The psychological/neuropsychological testing process is designed to provide a thorough understanding of your cognitive, emotional, behavioral, or academic functioning. While the specific steps may vary based on the type of evaluation and referral questions, the general process includes the following:

  • Initial Interview: The process begins with a clinical interview to gather information about your background, current concerns, medical and developmental history, and relevant life experiences. For children and adolescents, parents or caregivers are usually involved and present at the initial interview session with the psychologist.
  • Assessment Sessions: You or your child will complete a series of standardized tests and questionnaires tailored to your needs. These may assess areas such as intelligence, memory, attention, academic skills, emotional functioning, and behavior. Some assessments are completed one-on-one with a clinician, while others may be completed independently, depending on the referral question. Typically these involve one or more three-hour in-person testing sessions at the Banyan Tree.
  • Collateral Information: Sometimes input from family members, teachers, or other relevant sources may be requested to provide a comprehensive view of you or your child’s functioning across different settings.
  • Scoring and Interpretation: After testing is complete, the clinician scores and interprets the results, integrating information from all sources to develop a clear understanding of strengths and areas of need.
  • Feedback Session: Once the evaluation is complete, you will meet with the clinician to review the findings, discuss diagnostic impressions, and receive individualized recommendations for treatment, support, or accommodations.

The entire process is conducted in a confidential and supportive environment, with the goal of helping you understand you or your child’s unique profile and access appropriate resources. If you have questions or concerns at any stage, your clinician will be available to provide guidance and support.
