How Do I Know If I Need Psychological/Neuropsychological Testing?
Psychological or neuropsychological testing may be recommended when there are concerns about cognitive, emotional, behavioral, or academic functioning that cannot be fully understood through interviews or observation alone. You might benefit from an evaluation if you or someone you care for is experiencing:
- Difficulties with attention, memory, problem-solving, or other cognitive abilities
- Changes in thinking or behavior following a medical event such as a head injury, stroke, or illness
- Academic struggles or learning challenges that are not explained by other factors
- Emotional or behavioral concerns, such as anxiety, depression, or behavioral outbursts
- Unexplained changes in mood, personality, or daily functioning
- Questions regarding diagnosis, treatment planning, or eligibility for accommodations or services
Testing can help clarify the nature and extent of concerns, differentiate between possible diagnoses, and guide recommendations for treatment, educational planning, or support services. If you are uncertain whether testing is appropriate, a consultation with one of our psychologists can help determine the best next steps.
