IFS (Internal Family Systems)
IFS is an evidenced-based approach rooted in the theory theory that as humans we have multiplicity in our inner world, with various parts of ourselves that show up at different times in different ways, and that are sometimes even in conflict with each other creating discord in a client’s inner and/or outer world. IFS therapists help the client build a healthier and healed relationship between their core self and all the other protective or exiled parts of their system.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a theory and evidence-based approach to therapy used in the treatment of individuals, couples, and families. It has shown to be effective in the treatment of various DSM-V mental health diagnoses and their symptoms, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, phobias, and panic. It can be used in the treatment of chronic physical health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and is also a method of approaching personal growth and well-being.
The theory follows that as humans we have multiplicity in our inner world, with various parts of ourselves that show up at different times in different ways, and that are sometimes even in conflict with each other creating discord in a client’s inner and/or outer world. Though these parts sometimes show up in extreme roles out of protection, Internal Family Systems is completely non-pathologizing and non-judgmental. All parts are welcome in IFS therapy and are integral to the process of healing. Just as in family therapy where we aim to understand everyone’s perspective to be able to move forward, it is an IFS therapist’s job to help you listen, understand, and have compassion for each part of your own internal system. In doing so, you may find that you can live your life with more access to inner balance, and with a deeper understanding of the impact of their experiences. IFS is an experiential therapy, and IFS therapists utilize different therapeutic tools to help the client build a healthier and healed relationship between their core self and all the other protective or exiled parts of their system. These tools can include talk therapy, meditation, play therapy, art therapy, EMDR, and more.
