Dennis Caughy

Are you finding yourself feeling stressed, depressed or angry? Are the relationships in your life or within your family in conflict? Do you feel the choices you are making are not paying off and may be self-defeating for you? Are you having problems coming up with your own ways of coping, turning to drugs or alcohol to relieve pain? Have you had past experiences such as trauma or loss that have been too overwhelming to shake off? The good news is that with some support and learned coping skills you can begin to regain control of your life and feel more balanced.

In my practice, I strive to listen to each person’s individual story, empowering them to participate in their own self-discovery, validating their experiences and coming up with new skills to work through their problems. No one ever said that healing was easy or without its requirement of hard work and sacrifice. It’s always been my passion in life to help others find their own way to heal, knowing they are never alone on that journey.

In my work, I see people from a variety of ages and back grounds, both in the individual and family counseling setting. My therapeutic specialties are: the problems and treatment of depression and anxiety, child and adolescent behavior problems, including ADHD, and the assessment and treatment of alcohol and substance abuse issues.

My Experience:

Prior to recently relocating with my family here in Athens, I have over 20 years of clinical experience. For the last 16 years I maintained a private practice in Texas. I have worked in a variety of settings, both community health and private settings. I have run a variety of groups relating to anti bullying, effective parenting skills, anger management and outpatient substance abuse programs. I have taught clinical methodology classes at the University of Texas at Arlington.

My Education:

I am a licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, having graduated from The University of Maryland School of Social Work. Though I was trained as a family therapist, I have further expanded my training to specialize in a cross section of therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused and brief therapy. I also have a focus in treating PTSD and trauma and have been trained in Trauma Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

What to Expect from Me:

I am available for individual and family therapy, substance abuse screening and assessment, Monday through Thursdays. I am also available for case consultation, speaker’s bureaus and workshop presentation upon request. Please contact our our intake coordinator via the Contact Us Page. I look forward to working with you.
