Counseling approaches are as diverse as the needs of each client. Whether you are interested in a specific type of counseling or open to trying new techniques, we can help. Our clinicians are trained in a variety of different counseling approaches and can assist you in gaining balance in your life and restoring health and wellness.
Art in Therapy
The use of art in therapy is a process in which you will be guided by a therapist in relying on art making and the resulting artwork to explore your feelings and concerns, learn more about yourself, develop skills, reduce symptoms of anxiety or depression, and improve or regain a sense of well-being.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is currently one of the most sought after and requested therapeutic approaches. It is a practical approach in which the therapist helps the client understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings, beliefs and the effect these have on our behavior patterns and actions.
Community reinforcement and family training approach (CRAFT) is a behavior therapy approach to treating substance abuse. This method relies on non-confrontational ways to encourage loved ones to enter addiction treatment.
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a fairly new yet well researched tool for treating psychological trauma. Psychological trauma is any experience that causes a person to feel highly overwhelmed and helpless.
Harm Reduction is a concept that incorporates a spectrum of strategies from safer use, to managed use to abstinence to meet substance users where they are, addressing the conditions of use along with the use itself. It demands that treatment interventions and policies designed to serve substance users reflect the specific needs of the individual. Although there is no universal definition for Harm Reduction or structured formula for implementing it, the approach has several key principles that we find useful in working with people using both legal and illicit substances.
Hypnosis is a safe, natural state of relaxation combined with focused concentration. Though deeply relaxed, your unconscious mind is actually more alert, aware and focused in hypnosis than during normal waking consciousness.
Meditation is a practice that has been around for thousands of years. In general, meditation is a period of relaxed contemplation, with a goal of producing relaxation, fulfillment, or serenity. It has been used in many religious practices.
Motivational interviewing is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. Compared with non-directive counseling, it is more focused and goal-directed. The examination and resolution of ambivalence is its central purpose, and the counselor is intentionally directive in pursuing this goal.
Narrative therapy is a respectful and collaborative approach to working with people that accesses a person’s abilities and skills in standing up to problems that have shown up in his or her life.
Although play therapy is most often used with children, there are exceptions. Play therapy can be helpful to people with disabilities; those for whom drama, games, and imagination are important; and older adults.
