Depression is indeed classified as a mental illness by the American Psychiatric Association. According to the DSM-IV-TR, major depressive disorder is classified as a mood disorder. Mental illnesses, including depression, stem from a number of causes, including but not limited to: genetic predisposition, trauma, changes in hormones, changes in environment (positive or negative), giving birth, major physical illnesses, divorce, and other major life changes. Depression can be mild, moderate, or severe and anywhere between. One key item to note is that mental illness does not denote a flaw in character but rather a flaw in brain chemistry, just as physical illnesses are also a flaw in the chemical reactions in your body.
